Martin Winchcombe
Born in Waihi and raised in the small town of Paeroa, my carving journey began at the age of 16. Producing my first piece and finding I had a real passion for the art. Carving very quickly became an outlet of self-expression and creativity for me.
For many years carving had remained a hobby for me, quietly refining my skills when time permitted, whilst juggling raising my children and being an owner/operator of a fulltime plastering business.
Carving really ramped up again for me in 2021 when I attended the Mokau Bone Carving Symposium. A 4-day weekend with some of the country's top carvers.
I left feeling inspired and more determined than ever to take this passion and create a lifestyle. Something I had dreamed of doing for a long time.
I immediately converted my old shed at the back of my property into every carver's dream. A workshop with all the toys, complete with enough workspace for guests. I now return to the symposium each year as a tutor for the beginner carvers and part of the leadership team.
My vision now is to continue to produce carvings of the highest standard. I pride myself in the finishing of each piece.
This year I have opened my studio to guests for lessons and workshops. It is a real honour to have the opportunity to teach others what I have spent years learning. My desire is to inspire others to create quality carvings through self expression.
